Why did you choose to study abroad?

“Being surrounded by Indian and Japanese cultures while growing up, learning about different cultures has always been a fascination of mine. Initially, I did not think it would be possible for me to be able to study abroad while pursuing my dual degrees in Accounting and ISIT and graduating in eight semesters. However, Katie Gao proved me wrong and showed me how I could schedule my classes and successfully spend an entire semester abroad. I was thrilled to hear that, and jumped at the opportunity to live and study in Italy for a semester when presented to me. Studying abroad in Milan has given me the opportunity to immerse myself in Italian culture while giving me the flexibility to travel and focus on personal growth!”

Advice for those interested in studying abroad?
-
“Just do it! Even if it means have a heavy course load in the semesters before and after going abroad - it's going to be worth it. If you are scared of being so far away from home and familiarity, then challenge yourself. You get to meet incredible people and experience new things. You will be shocked to see how much more there is to see and learn about different cultures. After being in Italy for a few weeks, I already knew that these were going to be some of the most memorable months of my life!”

Advice for those interested in studying abroad?
- “
Just do it! Can you envision another time you'll be able to do something like it? Don't worry about things you'll miss at U of I, you'll have amazing times while abroad too. Anyways, it's just one semester, what is there to lose! Cost wise, it can actually be cheaper than a semester at U of I. There are also scholarships available through the College of Business and Gilman. Lastly, don't take BADM 310 and 320 if you are considering going abroad and haven't taken them yet. You can take them online which creates a lot of flexibility and free days to travel!”

Why did you choose to study abroad?
- “
I worked at the Embassy of Israel as an auxiliary policeman during my Korean military service and wanted to take the chance to visit the country and experience the culture myself!”

Advice for those interested in studying abroad?
- “
Do not see the country Israel simply from the media, such as news like CNN, BBC because they only show the tension, and politically unstable side of the country. However, Israel is becoming a big powerhouse in business, startups and making peace, which aren't shown much through the media. Whether you are Jewish or Christian, Israel is a very interesting country and the center of all religious people to gather and mingle around together without discrimination. Having knowledge in religious studies will help you understand better throughout the trip, especially for me, who has never read the bible before.”
